“Keep in Silence”(Beijing, Shanghai)

“Keep in Silence” series encompasses Xiang Jing’s work between 2003 and 2005, and touches upon a complex set of subjects and issues. She continues with the subject of growth from “Mirror Image” Series, and experiments with a number of languages, such as cinematic language and moving language. The “Virgin Series” and the “Body Series” within “Keep in Silence” mark the first attempts at addressing identity-related problems for Xiang Jing, and serve as preliminary trials for many of her later works.

This exhibition first showed at Art Seasons Gallery in the 798 District of Beijing, curated by Feng Boyi. Even at the time of a blooming art world in China, the exhibition still commanded a striking impact, as the power of “sensibility and self-sufficiency of art” still proved extremely valuable in contemporary art circle, dominated by concept-driven creation then. Milestone works such as Your Body exhibited publicly for the first time, marking the beginning of Xiang Jing’s mature phase and also marking the early moment that her large-scale works gained overwhelming attention. Your Body was invited to show at a series of Chinese Contemporary Art overseas subsequently, due to this first exhibition.

In 2006, Shanghai Art Museum specially invited Xiang Jing to host a solo exhibition with works from “Keep in Silence” series in the main exhibition hall. It became Xiang Jing’s first museum-level exhibition, and the seminar associated to the exhibition had an unparalleled list of participants.
