“Ways of Seeing” is the only occasion where Xiang Jing produced a work specifically for a group exhibition (“Guanxi – Contemporary Chinese Art”, Guangdong Museum of Art, 2011), therefore it forms its own series. To quote John Berger from his book Ways of Seeing, “We never look at just one thing; we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves.” Works of art and viewers of art often simultaneously act as the observer and the observed. To observe and to be observed form a rich guanxi (relationship), wherein the environment is also found.
