On May 13th, 2022, the exhibition “Stepping Out! Female Identities in Chinese Contemporary Art” opens at Lillehammer Art Museum, Norway, and showcases over 100 artworks by 26 selected Chinese female artists born between 1960 and 1995. The exhibition is jointly hosted by Lillehammer Art Museum, Norway, and Salzburg Museum der Moderne, Austria, curated by the directors from both hosting museum, Nils Ohlsen and Christina Penetsdorfer, and co-curated by Feng Boyi and LIU Xi. What “Stepping Out!” presents of contemporary Chinese female artists are their thinking, senses, multi-media expressions, and furthermore the wrinkles remarking their breakthroughs, one after another, on topics of identity-based demands, survival condition, and discourses of power in the context of the shifting society of China. This group show offers the audience in Norway, Denmark, and Austria a visual sample to access the contemporary Chinese feminine art.
After its closing on Oct 16th, the exhibition will tour to Gamle Strand, Copenhagen, Denmark (Dec 1st, 2022 – Mar 12th, 2023) Salzburg Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria (Apr 4th, 2023 – Jul 2nd, 2023).
Stepping Out! the book will be edited and published by HATJE CANTZ, Germany, after the successful opening of this exhibition.
