Utopias·Heterotopias – Wuzhen International Contemporary Art Exhibition 2016

Located in Zhejiang Province of China, Wuzhen is an ancient watertown with more than 1,300  years of history, now a popular tourist destination. The Wuzhen International Contemporary Art Exhibition links the globalization of contemporary art and Wuzhen’s cultural landscape and vision. The town has built a new creative model in contemporary art, related to new exhibition methods and discourses on power.

The exhibition venue is comprised of West Scenic District  (outdoors) and North Silk Factory (indoors). The North Silk Factory is the primary exhibition site created after the renovation of an abandoned 1970s factory. This exhibition invites the 40 internationally known artists to participate and some artists created site-specific artworks in Wuzhen.

The curator Feng Boyi chose “Your Body” by Xiang Jing to show in this exhibition. This work belongs to Xiang Jing’s “Keep in Silence” series finished in 2005. It shows a female body in the simplest and most direct way in front of the viewers. Using the artist’s own sensibility and intuition, the work tries to confront against the overwhelming predominance of text, over-interpretation, and conceptual art creation with the goal of showing in exhibition in the context of contemporary art.
